IKV ORGANISED A PANEL TITLED “THE ROLE OF METHANE EMISSIONS ON FIGHTING CLIMATE CHANGE AND POLICY SUGGESTIONS FOR TÜRKİYE”
IKV organised a panel titled “The Role of Methane Emissions on Fighting Climate Change and Policy Suggestions for Türkiye” in cooperation with Daktilo 1984 and Climate Union on 4 June 2024. In the opening speech section of the panel, Daktilo 1984 Editor-in-Chief İbrahim Enes Özkan stated that no non-governmental organisation in Türkiye has yet worked on methane emissions and that their report is a pioneer in the field. He said that there were outputs on methane at the COP28 meeting held in 2023 and that the EU indirectly contributed to its efforts in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and noted that there may be opportunities for Türkiye in this regard. Stating that methane gas can contribute to the global warming more than carbon gas, Özkan touched upon the importance of controlling methane emissions in the fight against climate change.
In the second opening speech, IKV Secretary General Assoc. Prof. Çiğdem Nas stated that they contacted EU officials about potential cooperation with the EU in the fight against climate change and conveyed their insights for establishing a dialogue within the framework of the green agenda to the EU stakeholders. Explaining IKV's activities in promoting the Green Deal and raising awareness about climate change, Nas shared that IKV contributes to policy-making processes in Türkiye on issues such as the preparation of the climate law and the determination of the coal phase-out plan. Expressing that the business circles’ interest in the Border Carbon Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) and twin transition has increased, particularly in sectors such as steel and aluminium where Türkiye’s export volume is high, Nas pointed out the significance of adjusting to climate targets for the future and the steps to be taken in this regard. Finally, Nas expressed that İKV is pleased to host the panel for the presentation of the report entitled "The Role of Methane Emissions in the Fight against Climate Change and Policy Recommendations for Türkiye".
In the panel section moderated by IKV Deputy Secretary General M. Gökhan Kilit, Climate Union founder Akın Ayberk Çilekoğlu expressed their satisfaction with being the first NGO to study methane emissions in Türkiye and expressed their hope that they will pioneer the initiatives to be taken on methane gas with this study. Pointing out that methane gas is the second most abundant greenhouse gas after carbon dioxide, Çilekoğlu stated that this gas has a higher earth-warming capacity than carbon dioxide. Indicating that they have developed policy recommendations specifically for Türkiye in dealing with methane, Çilekoğlu pointed out in his speech the importance of creating a national strategy on methane gas emissions, corporate training, and better data collection and data management.
Asterisk 2050 Project Coordinator Selim Yıldırım stated that the issue of methane emissions has been addressed globally since the beginning of 2010, and various targets have been set with the Global Methane Pledge. On the other hand, he stated that Türkiye revealed the updated First Nationally Determined Contribution targets in 2022 as an outcome of the Paris Climate Agreement. Yıldırım added that there is no direct reference to methane in the Paris Climate Agreement and that a national approach and outlook should be constructed regarding methane. Yıldırım mentioned that a methane regulation in Türkiye could create new opportunities for Türkiye in the EU, as the EU currently looks for a new market after the Ukraine-Russia war. The meeting ended with a question-answer session.
