JOINT STATEMENT FROM IKV, TEPAV AND IPC: TURKEY SHOULD NOT BE LATE FOR ALIGNMENT WITH GREEN TRANSFORMATION

Turkey’s reputable research institutions working on development policies Economic Development Foundation (IKV), Turkey Economic Policies Research Foundation (TEPAV), and Istanbul Policy Center (IPC) published a statement indicating their findings concerning green transformation ideas gaining importance in the global agenda, along with the European Deal while emphasizing that Turkey should align its policies with that trend as soon as possible.
Assessing latest developments related to the Green Deal initiative in the EU, which is the biggest export market of Turkey, three institutions stressed the fact that this transformation is not limited with the EU, and economic and financial systems would evolve on a global scale following the return of the US to the Paris Agreement and increasing zero emission targets.
The statement pointed out that Turkey should take an active part in the process during which the West aims to strengthen its international competitiveness in a way to prevent a loss in competitive capacity, while reducing possible deficit and increasing the competitiveness in medium and long term.
While IKV, TEPAV and IPC announced that they would collaborate on an inclusive solution design; they stated the necessary steps that Turkey should take for its future as follows:
Turkey should ratify the Paris Climate Agreement of which Turkey was among the first signatories in 2016. It will be the first step indicating Turkey’s commitment to be a key factor in the global transition to a low carbon economy.
Turkey should update its Intended National Contribution Statement (INDC) for emission reduction submitted to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) secretariat in 2015 under current conditions.

Turkey should revise its industry, energy, agriculture, and trade policies along with a green transformation perspective in a bid to respond to challenges brought by the European Green Deal taking into consideration the fact that the EU is Turkey's biggest export market and the modernisation process of the Turkey-EU Customs Union.
