EP GREEN LIGHTS THE PARIS AGREEMENT
The Paris Agreement with respect to a new climate change regime which had been accepted during the Environment Council gathering all Ministers of the Environment of the EU Member States has been approved today at the EP in presence of UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon. Following the EP’s approval, the Paris Agreement needs to get the confirmation of the Council. With the approval of the Council, two important criteria which are needed for the implementation of the agreement will be effectively completed. These are, at least 55% of GHG emissions and at least 55 countries’ support in their respective national assemblies. From the 4 October 2016, the Paris Agreement has already been approved in the national assemblies of 62 countries. Nonetheless, the second criteria with respect to global emissions has not as of yet been completed. It is also important to highlight that these 62 countries comprise approximately 52% of the global emissions. There is no official communique from Turkey to the approval of the agreement.
