EU Enlargement Policy

The EU’s enlargement policy is the policy dealing with countries wishing to become members of the Union. Since its creation by six founding members in 1957, the EU has enlarged to 28 Member States through six enlargement waves. However, the number of member states stands at 27 since the UKs withdrawal from EU membership on 31 January 2020.

Currently, there are 10 countries that have an EU membership perspective. The countries that have acquired EU candidacy status are as follows: Türkiye, Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Moldova, North Macedonia, Serbia and Ukraine. Kosovo and Georgia are regarded as potential candidate countries.
