NEW COMMISSION AND COUNCIL PRESIDENTS NAMED FOR UPCOMING TERM
At the EU Leaders' Summit held in Brussels on 27-28 June 2024, a consensus was reached on the President of the European Commission, the President of the European Council and the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy for the period 2024-29. Accordingly, Ursula von der Leyen will continue as Commission President for a second term. Antonio Costa, former Prime Minister of Portugal, was agreed on as the President of the European Council. Ursula von der Leyen, supported by the centre-right European People's Party, and Socialist Antonio Costa represent a compromise between the centre-right and the centre-left. At the same time, the fact that the Commission President is German, and the President of the European Council is Portuguese also points to a geographical balance between the north and south.
The good news for Eastern Europe, which has been complaining that it has not been sufficiently represented in top positions so far, is the selection of Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas for the post of High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy. The election of two women to top positions in the EU institutions is also a positive development in terms of gender equality. The EP President has not yet been elected, but if former President Roberta Metsola is re-elected, it is likely that three of the four key positions will be held by women. In the following process, the distribution of tasks will be made after the first session of the EP and then the process of determining and approving these higher authorities and members of the Commission will take place. At the Summit held on 27-28 June 2024, the EU's strategic agenda for the period 2024-29 was also adopted.
