IKV ORGANIZED A MEETING TITLED "TÜRKİYE-EU RELATIONS, GREEN DEAL AND THE FUTURE OF EUROPE" IN KOCAELİ

IKV, in cooperation with FNF and hosted by Kocaeli University, organized a meeting titled "Türkiye-EU Relations, Green Deal and the Future of Europe" on 31 October 2023. The opening speeches of the meeting were delivered by Dr. Itır Aladağ Görentaş, Academic Advisor of the POW-EU-R Jean Monnet Module at Kocaeli University, Prof. İrfan Kaya Ülger, Head of the Department of International Relations at Kocaeli University, Prof. Recep Tarı, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences at Kocaeli University, Ayhan Zeytinoğlu, Chairperson of IKV and President of KSO, and Prof. Nuh Zafer Cantürk, Rector of Kocaeli University. The opening speeches focused on the activities of Kocaeli University, their aim to organize more EU-related meetings in the coming period and the need to benefit more from EU funds. In his speech, IKV Chairperson Ayhan Zeytinoğlu, briefly introduced the Foundation by explaining the activities of IKV and then touched upon the problems in the current Türkiye-EU relations and pointed out that despite all these problems, the support for EU membership in Türkiye is 66%.

Following the opening speeches, the first speaker of the panel moderated by Kocaeli University POW-EU-R Jean Monnet Module Coordinator Assoc. Prof. Pelin Sönmez, TOBB ETU Faculty Member Prof. Sanem Baykal discussed the historical background of Türkiye-EU relations, the importance of the Ankara Agreement and the problems in the relations. Prof. Baykal continued her speech by stating that the EU needs to reform its decision-making processes to determine how it will act in several policy areas, including enlargement, in the coming period.

The second speaker of the panel, IKV Secretary General Assoc. Prof. Çiğdem Nas, started her presentation by mentioning the causes and consequences of climate change and talked about the EU's climate targets, the European Green Deal announced in this framework and how the transformation it will bring will affect the policies of EU. The last speaker of the panel, IKV Deputy Secretary General M. Gökhan Kilit presented the current situation of Türkiye-EU trade relations and underlined the importance of updating and expanding the scope of the Customs Union and stated that Türkiye should be more prepared for this transformation. The meeting ended after the questions from the participants were answered.
