The world today is increasingly fragmented by the crises it is experiencing. Problems and the degree of polarisation within and between countries are on the rise, which is increasingly reflected in politics and international relations. We are now at the transition to a new era defined by growing geopolitical importance and protectionism, unilateral sanctions, withdrawal and termination of agreements, along with increasing military and economic pressures.

This publication looks at the successful and failed attempts at multilateralism in the wake of the pandemic and the Ukraine crisis. It begins by analysing the initial responses of the EU and Türkiye, long-time advocates of multilateralism, to the pandemic and their possible contributions to multilateralism in the post-pandemic period. It then analyses the impact of the war between Russia and Ukraine on multilateralism.
