IKV organised a webinar entitled “The Effects of the German Election Results on the EU and Turkey-EU Relations” on 30 September 2021. The opening speech of the webinar, which was moderated by IKV Deputy Secretary General M. Gökhan Kilit, was delivered by IKV Chairman Ayhan Zeytinoğlu. In his opening speech, IKV Chairman Zeytinoğlu discussed different coalition scenarios and stated that the German federal elections held on 26 September 2021 were important not only for Germany, but also for Europe and Turkey-EU relations.

Following the opening speech, Turkey’s Permanent Delegate to the EU Ambassador Mehmet Kemal Bozay delivered a keynote address. Ambassador Bozay referred to Merkel's historic legacy and Germany's central position within the EU. Regarding Turkey-EU relations, Ambassador Bozay talked about the the positive agenda and said that bilateral relations would continue on regional and other issues.

The webinar continued with a panel discussion on the implications of German election results on Turkey-EU relations and the EU. The first panelist, Guenter Seufert, Director of the Centre for Applied Turkey Studies (CATS) at the German Institute for International and Security Affairs, pointed out that German political parties had mixed views on Turkey and said that while the SPD’s focus was on democracy and the rule of law and that SPD would want to see these issues being addressed as part of an intensified Turkey-EU dialogue, the CDU wanted to see Turkey as a close partner rather than a member of the EU with common interests being defined as a first step. The second panelist, Turkish-German University Lecturer Dr. Ebru Turhan underlined that there were two reasons why Turkey was not mentioned during the election campaign, the first reason being the lack of clarity regarding the results until the very last minute and the second had to do with the fact that issues such as Islam, migration and Turkey, which could lead to more gains for the extreme right, were not instrumentalised.  The third panelist, Hamburg Hochschule Lecturer Dr. Yaşar Aydın, stressed that while it was welcome to have 18 MPs of Turkish origin in the German Bundestag, these deputies were not expected to be active on issues related to Turkey. The final panelist, IKV Secretary General Assoc. Prof. Çiğdem Nas, analysed the election results from the perspective of the Turkish diaspora in Germany, Turkish-German relations and Germany's position within the EU. Assoc. Prof. Nas talked about the EU’s tendency to treat Turkey as a strategic partner or a neighbor rather than a candidate country, and highlighted that Turkey was part of Europe and therefore should be included in the Green Deal and the digital agenda. The webinar concluded with a question and answer session.
