On 26-28 May 2021, IKV Secretary General Assoc. Prof. Çiğdem Nas attended the international conference titled "European Union in International Affairs" held biennially. IKV Secretary General Nas, who participated in the session on the EU's foreign relations at the conference jointly organised by Universite Libre de Bruxelles (Free University of Brussels- ULB), Egmont Institute of International Relations, Brussels School of Governance, UN University, and the University of Warwick, delivered a presentation on “The Role of Emotions in Turkey-EU Relations”. After discussing the recent developments in Turkey-EU relations, Assoc. Prof. Nas highlighted the importance of emotional reactions in determining EU policies. Emphasizing that the role of emotions in international relations and decision-making processes was further analysed after psychology and neuroscience proved that there was no sharp distinction between logic and emotion, Nas indicated that in the context of Turkey-EU relations the emotional states created by the approaches towards the EU and Turkey affected the decision-making process. The other speakers of the panel session moderated by Prof. Ben Tonra were Assoc. Prof. Yonca Özer from Marmara University, Trineke Palm from the Utrecht University and Seda Gürkan from ULB, while Assoc. Prof. Özlem Terzi took part as a commentator.
