WHERE DOES TURKEY STAND ON THE INTERNATIONAL CLIMATE REGIME? (IKV BRIEF)

Climate change is projected to be one of the biggest challenges of the century. In the recent decade, temperatures are rising steadily, glaciers are melting, sea levels are rising and rainfall patterns are shifting in the whole world. Correspondingly, the number of climate related disasters increases each year, resulting in many casualties and economic losses.

As a country located in the Mediterranean Basin, Turkey is one of the countries that are most vulnerable to climate change, and thus it is very important for Turkey to implement highly ambitious climate policies. While Turkey has been participating in the international negotiations on climate change for decades, there have been some obstacles along the way, which could not be overcome.

The policy brief written by IKV Junior Researcher Melis Bostanoğlu entitled “Where does Turkey Stand on the International Climate Regime?” was published by IKV Brief Series. Analysing Turkey’s climate policies and its position on the international climate negotiations, the policy brief makes some policy recommendations regarding the climate actions Turkey needs to take.
