THE G20 AND AN ASSESSMENT OF THE GERMAN PRESIDENCY (IKV BRIEF)

The international structure of G20 consists of the world’s largest 20 economies in terms of 19 countries alongside the EU which totally realise 80% of global trade and produce the same percentage of the world’s products. Additively, these countries are home to 66% of the world’s population.

Although the decisions of the G20 are non-binding, it is known that 71% of the decisions taken during the period of 2008-2014 have been implemented. This demonstrates that G20 leaders pay special attention to the outputs of the G20 during their domestic policy-making processes.

Due to the lack of a permanent secretariat at G20, a country holds the presidency each year. In 2017, Germany assumed the rotating presidency and determined three priorities: building resilience, improving sustainable livelihoods and assuming responsibility. From 1 December 2016 to 1 December 2017, Germany worked for the improvements in these priority areas.

IKV Brief entitled “The G20 and an Assessment of the German Presidency” prepared by IKV Junior Researcher Merve Özcan aims to give information regarding the G20’s history, members, working procedures and structure. Moreover, the brief attempts to assess the global political context ahead of the 12th G20 Summit organised in Hamburg and the summits’s agenda in light of the highly prominent topics. Furthermore, the most profound output of the summit, the Leaders’ Declaration, is analysed in detail to provide a comprehensive information regarding the German Presidency to our readers.
