EARLY GENERAL ELECTION WAS HELD IN THE UNITED KINGDOM
The voting in order to choose the new government and the House of Commons which is the British Parliament’s lower house in early general election was concluded. Approximately 47 million constituencies voted in local time from 07.00 to 22.00 in the UK consisting of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. 68 political parties participated in the election which was called by Theresa May on April 18. In total, 3 thousand 304 candidates, 191 of them being independent competed for the 650 deputy seats of the Parliament.
According to the results of the early election of June 8th in Britain which was shaken by the terrorist attacks, Conservative Party under the leadership of Theresa May lost its majority in the parliament. Labour Party’s Jeremy Corbyn increased the number of seats in the parliament significantly. According to the results, Conservative Party in power has 314 deputies and the main opposition party Labour Party has 226 deputies. As it can be recalled, in the last election of 2015, Conservative Party won the majority by gaining 331 seats and Labour Party became the second party by gaining 232 chairs. With regard to the results from the ballot box, separatist Scottish National Party (SNP) is one of the losers of the election. The number of the deputies of SNP was decreased by 22 to 34. The number of deputies of Liberal Democrat Party (LDP) was increased by 6 to 14. Far right United Kingdom Independence Party (UKIP) does not have any deputy regarding the election results.
Considering the result, Conservative Party under the leadership of Theresa May failed to reach the number of 326 deputies which is the required for coming to power alone. The election results show the possibility of formation of coalition or minority government. English press declared these results to the world as 'hung parliament' which is a parliament that no one of the parties is in the majority. In order to come to power alone in the UK, a party has to win at least 326 of 650 seats.
These results are important to understand how the Brexit decision will be implemented. After the last year’s referendum with the surprising result of ‘UK leaving the EU’, The Prime Minister, Conservative Party’s David Cameron resigned and Theresa May came in the place of him. As it is known, the most important factor for May to hold an early election was to strengthen her hand in tough Brexit negotiations with EU by increasing the majority of her party in the House of Commons. May was stating that Labour Party, Scottish National Party (SNP) and Liberal Democrat Party (LDP) would make the Brexit process harder in the parliament. While May who is described as ‘Hard Brexiter’ wishes to cut all the relations regarding membership to EU, Labour Party and Liberal Democrat Party in opposition have the attitude of ‘Soft Brexit’ with the demands like the protection of the rights of the EU citizens living in their country and continuation to access to common market. Even though the official negotiations were planned to start in the beginning of June, it does not seem possible in reality.
