NEW IKV BRIEF: THE QUOTA ISSUE OF THE TURKISH ROAD TRANSPORT SECTOR IN THE EU

The quota issue continues to remain one of the overarching issues regarding the Turkish transport sector's relations with the EU. Indeed, as Turkish hauliers journey through various EU Member States, they are subject to various restrictions, of which the most important remain extra transit costs. These represent a significant burden as well as an obstacle on the effectiveness of Turkey's exports towards the EU. As we enter a new period with renewed prospects for the Turkish road transport sector as a result of upcoming negotiations regarding the modernisation of the Turkey-EU Customs Union, it can be argued that if the negotiations are successfully completed, it would represent a major breakthrough which would facilitate greatly the Turkish road transport sector's journeys towards EU countries. In this brief note prepared by IKV Junior Researcher Deniz Servantie, future prospects for the Turkish road transport sector are analysed as well as the various liberalisation scenarios.
