IKV PRESS RELEASE ON THE COUP ATTEMPT IN TURKEY
A faction within the Turkish Armed Forces attempted to take over control of the government and country in the night of 15-16 July. The coup attempt was thwarted as a result of the efforts of security forces, the call by President Erdoğan to the people to go out on the streets in opposition to the takeover attempt and support to democracy and resistance against military intervention by opposition parties, civil society organizations and the media.
The coup attempt was a watershed in Turkish politics since its prevention showed the extent and strength of democratic government in Turkey. We congratulate the government, opposition parties, civil society, media organizations and most importantly the People of Turkey in their unwavering support for democracy and relentless opposition to an attempt to take over power by force. We also wish to express our condolences for those who have lost their lives during the clashes. Those who are responsible for the coup attempt will be tried in accordance with principles of due process of law.
As a non-governmental organization working to support Turkey’s EU integration since 1965, we strongly believe in the continuing relevance of EU membership goal for Turkey as an anchor for Turkey’s development and further democratization.
In the aftermath of a coup attempt which had both tragic and path-breaking aspects, it is very important for all branches of government and society as well as the military establishment to make every effort to return back to normalcy. Turkey’s problems regarding consolidation of democracy, rule of law, Kurdish question and internal security should be handled in an atmosphere of pluralism, liberty and solidarity.
It is our expectation and wish that Turkey having thwarted a threat to democratic order, should continue in its path of Europeanisation and democratization by strengthening the quality of democracy on the basis of fundamental rights and freedoms, secularism, pluralism, rule of law and a political order based on separation of powers.
